Saturday morning we woke up at 8 AM, a few of the boys made us breakfast while the rest of us got all our gear ready and loaded into the vans for the outdoor trip. We then cleaned the house after getting everything loaded up and made about an hour drive north of Flagstaff into the San Francisco mountain range, driving around the beat-up dirt roads to find a nice spot big enough for us all to basecamp. Once we found a spot, we all spread out and set up our campsites, then we sat down and ate some pies that our guides got us for the 4th of July holiday weekend.
After we had our fill of pie, we all loaded up in the van and drove a few miles to the head of the Weatherford Trail. We did about a 3-mile hike, took about 20 minutes to journal about our SIC topic, and upon making it back to the vans some of the boys spotted a lake nearby and went swimming. We then loaded back up in the van and headed for camp. We cooked cheeseburgers and hot dogs for dinner and ate some more pie followed by an AA meeting then went to bed for the night. Sunday morning we woke up, made bacon and egg bagels for breakfast, and took off on a 50-minute drive to the backside of Humphrey’s mountain to hike the Abaniwo to Bearjaw Trail loop. It was about a 6.8-mile hike with 2000ft in elevation change. Once at the top we had a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape north of Flagstaff, as well as a view of the peak of Humphrey’s. We took some individual and group photos then took off back down the mountain. The landscape on the mountain was filled with big pine trees and aspen trees.
After completing our hike, we made the 50 min drive back to camp where we had stir fry and sweet corn for dinner. We started a spades tournament that we didn’t get to finish due to lack of time. We had our SIC group, followed by an AA speaker meeting, and then it was off to bed for all the worn-out boys. Monday morning we woke up, had eggs and bacon for breakfast again, did a nice camp clean up, then had our end of the weekend community group. Finally, we loaded up all the gear in the vans and made the drive back to Flagstaff. All in all the boys had a great holiday weekend, filled with fun in the outdoors.
