This week’s outdoor adventure at Back2Basics was one the boys are gonna look back on when reminiscing the good times. At the start of the weekend for the guys, we spent Friday at the house playing cards, hanging out and trying to stay cool in the very hot temperatures. We decided it would be best to stay in Flagstaff Friday night and head out the next morning. In the evening once some guys started to get antsy in the house, we went to a local park and played basketball.

After breaking a good sweat, we called it quits and went home to run an AA meeting. The next morning we found out we were heading up to Lake Powell to paddleboard and Kayak, which was great news due to the high heat. Our group hit the road heading north and arrived at the lake midday. Once we arrived we spent some time setting up our campsite right on the lake and fighting the strong winds setting up some shade.

After we were set up, the rest of the day we relaxed in the water staying cool, saving energy for kayaking the next day. The wind picked up Sunday, but the morning we woke up to great weather. The sun was out and there was not a cloud in sight. Morning dips in the lake were beneficial to waking up and getting the day started. We split into two groups, as one went out on the lake in the boats, the other stayed back waiting for them to return for their turn. The first group had perfect weather with the low wind as they paddled across in search of spots to cliff jump, explore, and journal. Their search was successful and all the guys launched off numerous cliffs into the water below.

After further exploring around the lake, the second group got their crack at it and headed across as the wind picked up. The twenty-minute or so trip across the lake turned into an almost hour fight against the waves, but with steady determination, they reached the other end and got to jump off some cliffs also. They knew they were in for a test as they headed back across and quickly realized that the waves were getting the best of them. Making it to almost the center of the lake, taking cover from the wind behind a towering rock formation. Sunday night, the boys were fighting the winds and sandstorms in our campsite and trying to run down the gear that was constantly flying away in the wind.

After trying to tough it out and wait for the winds to die down, we decided it would be best to drive back towards Flagstaff and camp near Mount Humphreys. Lucky for us, we stopped at Taco Bell because the winds were so strong cooking was near impossible and whatever we would have made would be instantly covered in sand. Getting to the north side of Mountain here in Flagstaff we set up camp and called it a night after a couple of hour drive back. Even with the sandstorm and windy conditions, the group loved every minute of the trip and it even ended up being some of the guy’s favorite spots so far. Another great weekend in the books here at Back2Basics.
