Another day another lack of dollars over here at the Back2Basics Outdoor Adventure Therapy LLC for your beloved boys. And yes, we are boys. But right now, we are working on the Boys2Men transition (wink) and it is going swimmingly. As a set we departed for the Hell’s Canyon Wilderness area west of Phoenix. Or as it’s called in Arizona, the eighth wonder of the world/God’s gift to mankind. Boy was it hard to be so close to a cultural mecca yet so far away, but I digress…
Like a guerrilla unit fighting for Cuban Liberdad we grabbed our packs and hiked out to our god-chosen (guide-chosen?) spot in the low desert. Dessert? Desert. Yeah. The one you don’t want two of. The strong hikers motivated the minimally exceptional hikers and the unit functioned like a rarely-oiled machine. Some were gumpy, some were dumpy, some were lumpy, the ground was bumpy. Some were stoic, some were hysterical, some were so comfortably in the middle range of emotion it’s hard to convey the expressions upon their faces. All were cold.
Day 2: The second day. The majority of the group decided that enough peaks had not yet been bagged during our time in Arizona. I was in agreement. We needed to get our numba’s up fa’ sho. But this peak wasn’t just any peak. It was the peak with no name. Nameless. Faceless. Bloodless. A peak without mercy, a peak without regard for human health or happiness. After returning we headed back to camp for dinner, and we held an AA meeting regarding selfishness and how it negatively affects our lives.
Day 3: After packing up camp and heading out for the day, we stopped to have some dinner and a ten minute meditation. What a beautiful scene that was under the stars and the moon. No joke, the moon winked at me ; ) The next morning we awoke to a beautiful morning, headed out and came home. Another weekend in the books!
