Dear Families,

On 1/4/19, five of us started a Wilderness First Responders (WFR) course with the Flagstaff Field Institute.

This was a 9-hour a day course for 9 days with two 14-hour days thrown in. All five of us have been especially stoked on the outdoor aspect of the B2B program and have shown up well during our stay here. When presented with the opportunity to take this course we were all enthusiastic, we looked at this as a privilege and something we could earn during our stay in residential.

The course was filled with indoor and outdoor activities. Many of the indoor classes included information on basic medical training for accidents in the backcountry and how to appropriately respond when definitive care is not readily available. Outdoor activities were scenario based, which meant that clients in the class were split into groups with one person being the “patient,” one person being the lead rescuer and the third person being an assistant to the lead rescuer.

The scenarios started off with basic problems resulting from common backcountry injuries. Eventually these scenarios became serious and complicated. One of the more severe injuries which required rescuers to react promptly and with flawless communication was a patient who had a broken femur and who was also hypothermic.

This course allowed us to practice specific skills we have learned here in B2B. Two of the most important skills we used were clear communication and teamwork. This course was very overwhelming for all of us in the first few days but we leaned on each other when we were struggling and towards the end, we all felt very confident in the skills that were presented.

This opportunity was amazing and very much appreciated by all of the WFR boys.

Thanks,

Client J and Client N
