For a lot of the clients at Back 2 Basics this was our first in-town trip. Also, for the majority of us, our first New Year’s eve/New Year’s Day sober in a long time.

fireworksThe festivities began Sunday morning. On awakening to nourish our big burly bodies, we started our day off at the gym and then with a client’s family recipe called french toast souffle. The smell coming in from the gym was delightful and man, oh, man was it delicious.  It was a very active day for the crew here at B2B. After a very fulfilling breakfast we headed over to the Flagstaff Vertical Relief Climbing Gym to do some indoor rock climbing. We climbed some top rope courses which were 40 foot tall rock walls with a rope attached to the top.  Then we did some free climbing without ropes, which is called bouldering. We also had some free time during the day for activities which included some skateboarding, hacky sack, and some ultimate frisbee. Later, we had our Head client Chef cook up some creamy garlic Parmesan mushroom chicken, which I must say was delicious, and let me tell you, there were no leftovers.  We then attended the Flagstaff Pinecone Drop which is similar to the New York City ball drop, but instead using a giant pinecone with flashing lights.  Many of the clients exclaimed this was the most fun they have had sober in a long time. We all yelled at the top of our lungs when that pinecone hit the ground, it was time for 2018!

hiking for New Years

Monday, it was our first day of the new year and we wanted to do it right. After an amazing breakfast that included a pile of bacon and some super delicious eggs, once again, made by the Residential Head Chef, we ventured off on a hike to Sandy’s Canyon. The hike was 2.5 miles each way, 5 miles altogether. We got to see some Coconino sandstone along our trail which was quite magnificent with its beautiful color patterns.  We ended our first 2.5 miles at the Fisher’s Point cave where we journaled about our New Year’s Resolution.  We came back to the house and shared what we had wrote and, surprisingly, we all wrote about being sober this year.

hiking for New YearsTuesday was also a very chill day. Our plan at first was to go to Buffalo park, but that quickly changed when the group decided we would rather go play beach volleyball and another round of ultimate frisbee. We started off with an intense volleyball game. Team 1 won the first round then got demolished in round 2. Team 2 took home the victory after winning by 1 point in the last round. We then decided it was time for ultimate football. It was basically ultimate frisbee but with a football. That went on for an hour or so until we were completely out of breath.  We then came home, washed the group van, ate some outstanding turkey sandwiches, and ended our amazing in-town trip. It was an all-around great trip for the crew here and I think this was a lot of the clients’ favorite trip.
